Parametric Jewelry

파라메트릭 디자인(Parametric design)은 매개변수(Parameter)를 중심으로 하여 알고리즘을 통해 디자인 결과물을 생성하는 컴퓨터 기반 디자인 기법이다. 이는 디자인 과정에서 쉽게 해결할 수 없거나 수행하는 데 있어 큰 노력과 인력이 필요한 과제에 대해 적절한 도구로써 사용될 수 있고, 또한 기술과 예술을 결합하는 데 있어서 좋은 매개 역할을 수행한다.

작가는 참여형 장신구라는 개념을 설정하고 착용자가 자신의 정보를 입력하는 방식으로 디자인 과정에 참여시켰다. 고유한 형태를 만들기 위해 착용자의 고유한 정보들 중 하나인 개인정보를 매개변수로 사용하였으며, 특히 주민등록번호가 가지고 있는 대표성 및 상징성, 그리고 주민등록번호 안에 담겨있는 정보의 내용에 주목하였다.

개인정보를 파라메트릭 디자인 기법을 통해 고유한 형태로 기호화 시키는 과정에서 주민등록번호 내부에 담긴 출생일, 성별, 지역 등의 정보들을 활용하여 인터넷의 기상청 공개 응용 프로그램 프로그래밍 인터페이스(Open API, Open Application Programming Interface)를 통해 착용자의 출생일 및 출생지역의 날씨와 기상 정보를 가져올 수 있었으며, 이를 통해 인적사항뿐만 아니라 추가적인 정보도 형태 생성에 활용할 수 있었다.

또한 parametric jewelry 라는 큰 주제를 가지고 작업을 진행하면서 개인정보와 관련하여 시간과 공간, 그리고 가족과 인간관계를 소재로 사용해 형태적으로 반영되게끔 하였고, 기법과 주제가 긴밀하게 연관될 수 있도록 하였다.

작가는 착용자의 정보를 기호화하여 형태를 완성하는 이러한 과정에서 형태를 디자인하는 새로운 방법과 가능성을 모색하고자 하였다.

The parametric design is a computer-based design technique that creates design output through algorithm with a focus on parameters. The design can serve as a proper tool to solve tasks which require enormous effort and manpower, or cannot be easily settle. It also functions as a good means to combine techniques and arts.

I have set a concept of participatory jewelry, and involved each wearer in the process of design personally by entering their data. In order to create unique forms, I have employed the wearer’s personal data as parameters, with a focus on the contents that the identification number has, as well as its representativeness and symbolism.

In the process of symbolizing personal data into unique forms through the parametric design, the date of birth, gender, places and etc. contained in the identification numbers have been utilized to learn the date of birth, weather information of the birth place of each wearer through Open API (Application Programming Interface) of the Meteorological Administration on the internet, and thereby additional information could be put to use for creating forms.

While working under a grand theme entitled PARAMETRIC JEWELRY, I have made use of time and place, family and human relations associated with personal data, to reflect them in creating forms, with techniques and themes being closely connected.

I have sought for new modes and prospects in the process of coming to perfection of forms by symbolizing the personal data of wearers.
